Chiefs, Legacy Start Strong in League of Legends Oceanic Pro League

After the first week of competition a clear pecking order has been established.

The League of Legends Oceanic Pro League is now underway and after the first week of competition, a clear pecking order has been established.

Top of the table sits the Chiefs Esports Club. No stranger to the first position, as the reigning regular-season champion, the Chiefs burst out of the gates with two dominant wins in the opening week.

First up, PentanetGG - the newest team to join the league - fell to the Chiefs 17 kills to 8. After 29 minutes of pure dominance, Avant Gaming was the second team to fall to the Chiefs. A solid opening week for one of the OPL’s most storied organisations.

Another mainstay in the league, Legacy Esports, were the second team to go undefeated in the opening week.

Avant gaming was the first team to fall to Legacy this split, but they certainly won't be the last as Legacy is looking to be a top contender throughout the entire year-long competition.

Incredible team fighting saw Legacy get the better of Melbourne Order in their second match of the week.

In only their second season in the OPL, Gravitas had a rocky start after they lost their opening match to Melbourne Order. But Gravitas bounced back, though they had to work for their first win of the season against Mammoth, their perseverance won out over the 2019 playoff champions.

Champions of 2018, the Dire Wolves, started strong with a dominant game over Mammoth but tripped over themselves in a poorly-executed team fight at the Baron pit against PentanetGG.

The perennial middle-of-the-pack team, Melbourne Order, dominated their opening game against Gravitas from start to finish. But poor team fighting against Legacy handed them their first loss of the split.

Rounding out the mid-tier teams was the OPL newcomers, PentanetGG, who lost their opening match to the regional juggernaut the Chiefs, giving the newcomers a taste of top tier Oceanic League of Legends.

The team rallied in their second match against the Dire Wolves, Mid Laner Getback having a standout game against his old team, almost single-handedly keeping PentanetGG alive long enough for them to gain the advantage.

Avent Gaming struggled to find their feet in both of their matches against Legacy Esports and the Chiefs - the two teams at the top of the tables. It was a tough week for Avent Gaming, who will be looking to bounce back heading into week two.

Rounding out the bottom of the table is Mammoth, the 2019 OPL Split 2 playoff champions. In the opening week of the 2020 Split, Mammoth failed to find any wins after hard-fought matches against Gravitas and the Dire Wolves.

The season has only just begun, but already Chiefs and Legacy have clearly established themselves at the top of the table, but only time will tell if they can stay there.
